MCHT Preserves in the
Southern Maine Region

Although Maine Coast Heritage Trust has helped conserve thousands of acres in York County, you won’t find an MCHT preserve until you reach Casco Bay. Then you’re in for a treat. MCHT’s Casco Bay island preserves range from Lanes Island, a beach-ringed island a stone’s throw from Winslow Park in Freeport, to wild Whaleboat Island in Harpswell. Enjoy!

Clapboard Island East

A short excursion from the Falmouth mainland, this island preserve features mature hardwoods, towering pines, abundant bird life, a quartet of gravel beaches, and pleasant views of Casco Bay.

Lanes Island

Located near the mouth of the Royal River, Lanes Island in Yarmouth has drawn visitors to its sandy shores for centuries.

Malaga Island

Malaga Island, part of Phippsburg, was once home to a mixed-race community forcibly removed by the state. Today, it is a public preserve welcoming visitors to explore its extraordinary history and natural beauty.

The Goslings

This trifecta of small islands features idyllic sand beaches and inviting campsites in the heart of Casco Bay.
