Cobscook Bay Boat Tour 2
Second trip added!Click Here to Register
Join us for a picnic cruise and tour of Cobscook Bay and its many tidal inlets, quiet coves, and wildlife-rich islands. We will witness the spectacular views and abundance of marine life and wildlife in one of Maine’s great unspoiled coastal regions.
We depart from Eastport (the easternmost city in the United States!) and join Captain Butch Harris aboard his comfortable 47-foot lobster-style boat for our picnic tour. MCHT Steward and local resident Deirdre Whitehead will share her knowledge of the natural and human history of the Bay, along with the extensive conservation work that has been completed here. MCHT Project Manager Jacob van de Sande will be aboard to share information about MCHT’s projects (past, present, and future) in the region. Lunch is provided.
The name “Cobscook” is derived from the Maliseet-Passamaquoddy tribal word for “boiling tides.” With an average 18-foot tide, strong tides flow in and out of the Bay, nourishing one of the most productive, unspoiled, and species-rich marine ecosystems in the state.
This extensive tour will pass MCHT preserves on Treat Island, Matthews Island, Lincoln Cove, and Sipp Bay as well as conservation easements on Crow Neck and the Straight Bay Islands. We’ll make note of fish weirs, alewife runs, and rockweed harvesting in this ecologically rich area and hear firsthand from Capt. Harris about scallop and urchin fishing in the Bay, as well as lobstering.
What to bring:
We will spend the full three hours on board the boat. It can be significantly cooler on the water. Please dress warmly. There are simple bathroom facilities on board. We recommend bringing:
- Appropriate clothing and extra layers (i.e. windbreaker, rain jacket, fleece)
- Water and snacks
- Hat and sunglasses
