Join Maine Coast Heritage Trust for two wonderful free events, enjoying a morning outdoors exploring birdhabitat and building bluebird nesting boxes at Erickson Fields Preserve, 164 West Street in Rockport.

Bird Walk - 8:00 a.m.

The day begins with an 8:00 a.m. bird walk led by MCHT steward/naturalist, Kirk Gentalen. Kirk will guide participants around MCHT’s Teen Ag garden and through the woods in search of migratory songbirds – warblers, thrushes, vireos, sparrows – and discover what other feathered creatures inhabit the preserve.

Over the last 26 years, Kirk has worked as a naturalist in 13 states and led birding trips as far away as Alaska, California, and Georgia. Locally, he has led trips for the Midcoast and National Audubon Societies, Down East and Acadia Birding Festivals as well as a regular summer series of Thursday morning bird walks on Vinalhaven Island. Kirk works primarily on Vinalhaven Island where he also edits the “Vinalhaven Sightings Report” blog of nature sightings from around Vinalhaven.

Bluebird Nesting Box Workshop - 10:00 a.m.

The bird walk will be followed at 10:00 a.m. by a Bluebird Nesting Box Workshop with John Twomey. Materials and guidance will be provided for participants to build boxes to take home. An avid naturalist, John has worked for years to maintain and improve the wildlife habitat on his farm in Montville after retiring as a professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. John and his partner, Leigh Norcott, have conducted such workshops for MOFGA's Farm and Homestead Day, the Midcoast Conservancy Land Trust, and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension's Rural Living Days. These efforts have resulted in the deployment of roughly 190 bird boxes throughout Central Maine!

The bird walk and the workshop are free. Attendees may register for one or both.

Space is limited.

Registration is recommended by May 22. For more information and to register, email Joelle Albury at .
