Add this event to my calendar 07/08/2018 08:30 AM 07/08/2018 04:30 PM America/New_York Black Island Hike

A favorite picnic and hiking destination for generations, 451-acre Black Island has pink granite bluffs, cobble beaches, and a rich history as a bustling granite quarry. We’ll explore it all in this day-long excursion.

While the island hasn’t had year-round residents since the 1930s, it supported a thriving community in the late 1800s, complete with its own schoolhouse. The trail that runs through the now quiet interior of the island is an overgrown track that ran granite from the quarry site in the middle of the island to the old stone wharf where we'll be landing.

Our day on the island will include an exploration of the quarry and a hike across the interior of the island to the south end. Once there, we’ll cross over the gravel bar which is exposed at low tide to enjoy our picnic lunch on Little Black Island.

What to expect:

Black Island is a remote island with no facilities. We will be spending a long day there! The hiking is strenuous in some spots with uneven footing and large granite blocks that must be climbed over in the old quarry section. We will shuttle to the island from our boat in a small dinghy. Participants must be agile enough to climb from the boat into the dinghy and from the dinghy onto the shore at the island. Pack a pair of rubber boots or sandals that can get wet getting out of the dinghy and a pair of dry footwear for the hike. You do not want to spend the day hiking in wet shoes!

What we provide:

  • A bagged lunch, one bottle of water, and a map

What to bring:

  • Appropriate clothing and extra layers (ex: wind breaker, rain jacket, fleece)
  • A small backpack for your lunch and belongings
  • Good walking/hiking shoes (must be closed-toe - not sandals)
  • A hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera
  • Binoculars
  • Lots of water and a snack
