Stories from the Coast

Tracking, Trekking, and Bonfires

The days are growing a little longer and the sun a bit brighter; February is a great time to enjoy the beauty of the Maine Coast. Need ideas to plan a fun winter adventure? Check out the dozens of events, including five led by Maine Coast Heritage Trust, happening during this month’s Great Maine Outdoor Weekend.

On Friday, February 12 we kick off the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend with hot cider and a midday bonfire at our Boot Head Preserve in Lubec. Enjoy a little outdoor fun and camaraderie while helping us clear brush from the preserve’s new parking area. Wear burn resistant boots and some clothes you don't mind getting burn holes in. Many hands make light work and we welcome your help.

Spend Friday night in Vinalhaven for “Owls are Easy, Otters are Easier.” This entertaining presentation and slideshow by MCHT Regional Steward Kirk Gentalen will showcase winter wildlife on the island. Awake the next morning and join Kirk for a guided snowshoe trek in search of owls, otters, and other resident fauna. Please bring your own snowshoes and dress warmly for the weather.

There are two other opportunities to explore MCHT preserves on Saturday, February 13. Visit MCHT’s Aldermere Farm Preserve in Rockport for a free guided snowshoe and ski tour through the scenic open pastures and woods of this picturesque coastal property. At the same time across the cold waters of Penobscot Bay, a warm bonfire will be welcoming winter enthusiasts to groomed trails at MCHT’s Witherle Woods Preserve in Castine. Bring your own gear and lots of layers to stay warm.

Many other organizations are sponsoring Great Maine Outdoor Weekend events. Check out the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend website for more information.
