Trail Steward (6-month position)

Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) is looking for a trail steward who will supervise two assistants working on many of the Trust’s mainland and island preserves over three summer months (June-August), and work with MCHT staff in the spring and fall on a variety of stewardship tasks. This is a 6-month position, mid-April to mid-October.  Work will include trail clearing, trail improvement (including building steps and erosion control structures), boundary marking, painting structures, basic carpentry, and vegetation control (brush saw work, clipping, etc.) Although not directly responsible for public education, the trail stewards will be representing MCHT and will be expected to interact positively with the public when there is an opportunity.  The trail stewards will move frequently, although will occasionally work at the same site for more than one week.

During periods without the assistants, the Trail Steward will help MCHT stewardship staff with trail work, boundary marking, carpentry tasks, boat and cabin preparation and closing, etc.

The Trail Steward and Assistants will be based on Mount Desert Island and MCHT will provide accommodations there in a small cabin.  During work times at other sites, accommodations will vary, depending on location.  There will be cabins at some sites, other sites will require camping.  Days will be long, and days off will be clustered.  Some basic gear will be provided.
